Designed by John DeLorean, the founder of the DeLorean Motor Company, the Chevrolet Monte Carlo was developed in response to the Buick Riviera, Pontiac Grand Prix, and Ford Thunderbird. The first generation Monte Carlo was designated as a powerful personal car and displayed the longest hood in Chevy's history -- six feet and had a 116-inch wheelbase. These Monte's had an array of drive train option that ranged from the 350 and 400 small blocks to the 402 and 454 big blocks. The SS-454 option was available with an automatic transmission only and available for 1970 and 1971. In 1972 the Super Sport package was dropped and replaced with the "Custom" package.

The 330-horse 402 V8 was listed as a 400 cubic inch V8. Notes: The Monte Carlo was pretty much unchanged in 1971. Only 1919 SS Monte Carlo's were built out of 128,600 total. This was the last year that the Super Sport option would be offered until 1983. The 1971 Monte Carlo can be identified by the rectangle parking lamps in the front bumper; hood ornament; and the finer meshed grille. The SS-454 package could now be ordered with a 4-speed manual. The compression ratio was dropped on all engines including the 454 V8, which fell to 8.5:1.

Notes: Few changes were made to the 1972 Monte Carlo. The SS package was cancelled after 1971, but a "custom" package was now offered. The 454 engine was bogged down to 270-horsepower. The 1972 Monte Carlo can be identified by the vertical rectangular parking lamps between the grill and the head lights, the emblem engraved on the parking lamp lens and no hood ornament.
