The fourth generation Monte Carlo was the end of the rear-wheel drive, full frame Montes. The third and fourth generations looked similar, however Chevrolet defined the 1981 model as "A completely new generation of Monte Carlo." The Monte Carlo was reshaped for less gas-wasting air drag. The tail lights were more traditional, instead of the horizontal design of the third generation. In 1983, the Super Sport package returned which included the distinctive nose and rear spoiler. The 180-horse 305HO V8 small block was standard for the SS. The SS Aero Coupe body style was available for 1986 and 1987, designed mainly for higher top speed on NASCAR super tracks. Only 200 were sold to the public each year as a requirement to race them in NASCAR. The new '86 LS Monte Carlo bore a smoother Euro-nose with the standard 4.3 V6. The last rear wheel drive Monte was built on Friday, December 11, 1987 at 5:29PM at the Pontiac Michigan plant. This seemed to mark the end of the Monte Carlo.

1984 Monte Carlo

The above photos are of an LS Monte Carlo that were taken from a Cardomain website, but there are currently no photo's on the page.

The above photos are of a SS Monte Carlo. I cannot remember who's car this is, but I do know he is a member of the Monte Carlo SS forum.

Notes: Now it gets tricky to identify the Monte Carlo's year by year. For 1984, the Super Sport now had a "sport" steering wheel, not the standard steering wheel. In 1984, GM produced a version of the Monte Carlo SS that was only available in Mexico, which has come to be known as the "Mexican" Monte Carlo SS. The Mexican version featured an LM1 Goodwrench 350 cubic inch V-8 that produced 265 horsepower and 350 foot pounds of torque and came with a Hurst 4-speed manual transmission only. It also came with no factory spoiler, 14-inch "checker board" wheels, a "special" steering wheel, Pontiac Grand Prix interior with "SS" embroidered in the headrests, power door locks with manual windows only and different side graphics.

1985 Monte Carlo

Pictured above are LS Monte Carlo's. The Monte Carlo pictured to the right was taken from a cardomain website, but there are no photo's of the car on that page anymore. The car was unfortunately stolen from its owner.

This Monte Carlo SS has been owned by Bruce and Cathy Savage since it was new and only repainted ONCE. The current color is 1995 Chevrolet Impala Dark Cherry Metallic, which is as close to the original color as they could get. This is a factory non-A/C, split bench seat and column shifter car.
